What is Stars?
Stars are awarded when you finish a painting. They are one of the three Prestige requirements, alongside Cash and paintings sold. Finishing and selling are different events. Stars can happen at the easel, and the sold-painting counter happens when you press Sell. The appraisal shown on the canvas is a star grade that can reach four or five stars. It is not published whether that grade's star count is the same number added to the Prestige Stars line. Hired NPC painters are not a meaningful source of the Prestige counters.

How do you get Stars?
Finish a canvas. Read the Prestige menu to see how the Stars line moved, and read the canvas appraisal for the grade buyers are pricing.
How do you use Stars?
Keep finishing paintings during a Prestige push even if you immediately sell the weaker grades for Cash. A canvas you leave unfinished does not add a Star.
